UBC Tailings Initiative

Mine tailings represent a persistent and increasingly significant issue across the extraction landscape, from permitting to closure.

The University of British Columbia has significant breadth and depth in skills and expertise related to this topic and this Initiative combines the proficiencies of the Department of Mining Engineering; the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) including Geological Engineering; and the Mineral Deposit Research Unit (MDRU) to provide innovative and integrated approaches to solve tailings issues.

Collaborating with industry partners and expert consultants is essential.

This initiative has a goal to undertake research on critical topics to provide knowledge that contributes to reducing or eliminating persistent scientific and technical issues related to tailings and related materials, from their source to their fate as part of the landscape.
